A life lived with Grace (a song for the Commonwealth)

Writer: Vanessa LeeVanessa Lee

Just over a month ago, a surprise email popped into my in

box. The events manager from MakeItYork announced that they were looking for a choir to perform at the Beacon lighting ceremony to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, and would Dunnington Community Choir like to participate?

Of course we were delighted to be considered and have since been learning and rehearsing the specially commissioned song: A life lived with Grace. Also known as A Song for the Commonwealth.

The song itself is the result of a rigorous competition including lyricists and composers from across the entire Commonwealth. The winning lyricist is Lucy Kiely from Sydney, Australia and the winning composer, Vincent Atueyi Chinemelu from Anambra State, Nigeria. It is a beautiful, gentle song which praises the Queen's selfless character and her life's joyous effect on all her subjects.

Verse 1

When the world has turned to darkness And there’s troubled seas ahead There's a light that leads the ship back home to shore.

Chorus

A life lived with grace A heart filled with love Peace on earth and harmony in the heavens above.

Verse 2

When the day is slowly breaking And the dawn can’t find its way There's a sun that shines upon the world heralding a brand-new day.

Chorus

A life lived with grace A heart filled with love Peace on earth and harmony in the heavens above.

Verse 3

When the night has come a-calling And the daylight starts to fade There's a reason why the world rejoices singing all as one today.

Chorus

A life lived with grace A heart filled with love Peace on earth and harmony in the heavens above.

As we prepare to perform during the Beacon lighting ceremony on Thursday 2nd of June we are very aware of the honour of the task and hope that our performance will give Her Majesty the esteem she is due.

We very much hope you will come along and support us on this auspicious occasion.
